My story: from "too complex" to autistically ED-free

Hey, friend!

I’m Livia Sara, autism advocate and eating disorder survivor that now helps others find freedom. I am the author of the memoir Rainbow Girl and the cookbook Nourishing Neurodiversity. Thanks so much for stopping by!

You might know me as @livlabelfree on Instagram, but I'm also the host of The Liv Label Free Podcast, an eating disorder recovery coach, and the creator of my signature course Extremely Hungry to Completely Satisfied.

Growing up, I always knew I was different

I pretended to like all the things other girls liked, but never really fit in.

I attempted to mask my unease through external achievements; sports, grades, and eventually an eating disorder.

I was diagnosed with anorexia and depression at the age of 11…all while unknowingly autistic.

“You’re just going to have to accept the fact that you’re never going to get better”

Were the parting words of the “best eating disorder physiatrist in the country” when she kicked me out of the Dutch eating disorder treatment system.

I had been forced in and out of treatment for almost 5 years at this point, and was told an eating disorder was just something I was going to have to “manage” for the rest of my life.

A decade later, I discovered I’m autistic 😳

While fighting for my life, I felt there was something missing. Despite what the “professionals” had said, I truly did want to recover – so why did it seem so impossible?

I started doing my own research, immersing myself in science and possible explanations for the “odd” behaviors I had shown since childhood, behaviors many of the professionals told me were due to my eating disorder.

In 2020, I discovered I am autistic. Suddenly, everything fell into place and it became clear to me why all the attempts to "treat" my eating disorder never worked...in fact, they had only made my eating disorder WORSE!

My MESS became my MESSage

My autism discovery gave me the permission slip I needed to recover on my own terms. It allowed me to separate my autistic traits from eating disorder behaviors.

Today, I teach others how to use their autistic traits to their advantage in ED recovery so they can live the life they were born to live.

Whether you’re an autistic person struggling with an eating disorder or want to learn how to support someone who is, you’re not alone and I’m here to help. Book a call today to get a custom strategy for how we can work together!
